The Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 9500 Group 9 which covers the Brossa, Gawler and Clare have combined to deliver a project to improve dental health in Uganda. Dr Gavin Sidhu from the Barossa Valley Club worked in Uganda as a dentist for a while and was alarmed by the effect of Ugandans changing from a traditional low sugar diet to a modern Western high sugar diet which was contributing to children losing their teeth. Basic Dental Hygiene would save their teeth giving them a much more comfortable and healthy life.
The project to educate children in 4 schools in Uganda was initiated. A Rotary Club in Uganda took on the responsibility of managing the Ugandan side and a Rotary Foundation Global Grant application submitted. The Global Grant will supply a lot of the funding, but there are many criteria to meet before the money can be granted. Past District Governor Peter Thomas is contributing to the project, his experience is invaluable to ensuring the project meets the Global Grant requirements. There is still a need to raise funds to get this project up and running.
The Quiz Night for the Ugandan Dental Health Project is one of the fundraising activities being done.
