Theme for the month of December 2024

Disease Prevention and Treatment
There are those who say that it is useless to help the poor,
because the poor will always be with us, or that we do not have
the means to feed the world. The poor may indeed be with us always, but
it is not because we refuse to help them.
M.A.T. Caparas was Rotary International President 1986-1987 and his theme emblem summed up his belief.
"From A wheel of commerce
and Industry now a wheel of hope.
For children without polio,
For food for all people,
For a life worth living,
For a world at peace."
The way to alleviate suffering, is through vaccines, books, tractors, irrigation supplies & education. This is the substance of freedom and understanding...the real humanitarian aid

             President Steve's Snippets
Our application to support domestic violence survivors within the local community is progressing well. Before receiving the $2,000 from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, we need to spend the funds and provide receipts as proof of expenditure to claim the grant.
In addition to the grant, the Board has upheld our original commitment of $2,500. The Great Revival Shop has also contributed $2,000, bringing the total to $6,500—$1,500 above our initial target. This remarkable outcome is a testament to everyone’s dedication and effort.

Did you know that the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley has its own Foundation. Many of us recognize its role in funding university scholarships, but how much do we truly know about its
history, operations, and untapped potential? To help us better understand and utilize this vital resource, I’ve invited Grant Schuyler to give a presentation about this Foundation. This will be an excellent opportunity for us to learn exactly what this foundation is able to fund.
At meeting 3339, Damian Leach shared that The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International operates with only 8 cents in the dollar going toward administration which is remarkable. (ED: Admin costs were usually paid from the interest earned when money was invested for the 3-year period.)
In my previous snippet, I mentioned how our major fundraiser, the Barossa Airshow, is an ideal conversation starter for engaging the community. Similarly, our Foundation is another incredible initiative that can attract people interested in joining our active Rotary group to create meaningful change in our community.
I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our Members, Friends, and Honorary Members for your tireless contributions throughout the year. Your efforts make a tremendous difference in our community, and it’s a privilege to serve as your President.
I wish you and your families a safe and joyous Christmas, and a healthy and fulfilling New Year. Let’s look forward to another year of making a positive impact together.                                      .............................................................................................

           A note from Secretary Sandie.

A huge Thank You to all who attended the Christmas dinner meeting last Monday night, 16th December. The evening was abuzz with people chatting and having a good catch up with friends old and new.
My heartfelt thanks to you all for contributing to the raffle and the Christmas tree baubles fund-raisers. Your generosity resulted in $500 to put towards our club's Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence program, which in turn is assisting the Barossa Anglican program by purchasing personal and home safety devices for those experiencing domestic violence.
As explained by President Steve at the meeting, we have been successful in securing a District Grant of $2,000 which will be added to our club's commitment of $2,500, in turn supplemented by the very generous donation of $2,000 from the Great Revival Shop.
This total of $6,500 will make a big difference to families who are in awful circumstances, and I am so grateful for your support.
I look forward to seeing you at our Soiree, our first meeting for the new year, on Monday 6th January 2025, thanks to Hans Haan's kindness in making available his lovely garden. More details will be in the club Bulletin, but a quick reminder that this is a self-catered event so you will need to bring your own food, drinks, cutlery and crockery, and your chair. Tables will be provided.
I wish you all a joyous and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

                             Just a thought
Never give up. Yesterday's the past, Tomorrow's the future but Today is a gift. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. Learn from yesterday, Live for today, Hope for tomorrow, and let 2025 be your best year yet.
And may the new year bring some beautiful rain.
