Soiree is the traditional first meeting of the New Year. Once again we were fortunate, due to the generosity of Hans Haan, to enjoy the meeting in Hans’ garden.
We enjoyed the company of member’s children, John Little’s daughter Libby home for a holiday from France and Saxon, grandson of Bronwyn Lillecrappe. Back in Australia from Malaysia are Greg & Karen Norris. It is always a pleasure to welcome members’ relatives and former members to our meetings.
Thank you for members donating items for the raffle and silent auction, proceeds for the DG’s Partner’s dedicated charity- Childhood Cancer Association, a most worthwhile cause.
The Soiree is a leisurely return to Rotary activities after the Christmas and New Year holiday period. The following events in chronological order will require all members and Friends of the Club to pitch in and particpate when you can:
- Sunday 22nd January, Birthing Kits Assembly
- March , Tanunda Show, (guaranteed income of $1,200 for gate keeping duties)
- Sunday 16th April, Barossa Airshow 2023
- Anzac day breakfast at Tanunda RSL
Next meeting is on Thursday 19th January, guest speaker is Ashton Hurn, MHA for Schubert. Watch out for further information on the venue for this meeting.
If you can, attendance at Bev Rice’s funeral service this Wednesday 11th January would be appreciated by Honarary Rotarian Ian Rice and family.
Speedy recovery for Secretary Sandie and Barbara Hallion, partner of John Semmler, both Sandie and Barb re convalescing from recent ill health.

Rotary Soiree
Article provided by Marie Rothe
34 Rotarians, Friend – Ian Falkenberg and guests enjoyed a balmy evening at Hans Haan’s. Thank you once again Hans – truly a beautiful setting.
Our Honorary Rotarians – Tony Robinson and Brian Graetz with Helen, attended as did former Members Greg and Karen Norris, all the way from Penang and over from Paris Libby Little, daughter of John and not to forget our youngest participant Saxon Plumber, Bryce & Bronwyn’s grandson, who pitched in and helped Grandpa with the BBQ.
The Raffle Table was laden with loads of goodies and, with the Silent Auction items – a Cheeseboard, beautifully crafted by John Semmler and the two beautiful Paintings by our dear departed Bev Rice, $425 was realised for the DG Partner Program #1 (DG Paul Thomas; wife Kathryn) Childhood Cancer Association (SA).
President Peter Perkins reminded us that Bev Rice’s Funeral is Wednesday 11 January 2023 at 11.00 am in the Angaston Uniting Church, 12-14 Sturt Street, Angaston, to be followed by Bev’s committal in the Truro Cemetery.
Sadly missed from our gathering were Sandie Simons and Barb Hallion, who are both recuperating from major surgery. Best wishes to them and all our other members on the sick list were extended by Peter on our behalf.

Rotary Club of Barossa Valley Foundation Scholarship
2022 Recipient Luca Harper
Luca Harper has successfully completed his first year of the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Psychology (Advanced) program achieving 4 High Distinction, 2 Distinction and 2 Credit grades, therefore receiving a Grade Point Average of 6.25 out of a possible 7.00.
“I would like to thank the Barossa Rotary Club and the scholarship team at Adelaide University for providing me an incredible opportunity to further my studies. The reason I applied for the scholarship was that due to the distance from home to university and my job at a Venture capital firm, I had to move closer into the city. The scholarship has helped me find accommodation greatly impacting the amount of time I have to study and work. Thank you so much for your support, it has helped me enormously. Special thanks to John in particular from the Barossa Rotary Club.”
We are sincerely grateful for the support your scholarship has provided for students, like Luca. Without donor support, many outstanding students, like Luca, would find the continuation of their studies much more difficult.
Thank you for helping students achieve their educational ambitions and we look forward to working with you again in 2023.
