Theme for the month of August 2024
Membership and New Club Development
Quote of the Month
To share Rotary, we must increase our membership base.
To get from one spot to the next we must believe in the reality of serving others. We must mobilize the talents and resources within our clubs.
We need many younger members to rejuvenate our clubs, to provide
the power necessary to fully carry out our service activities. I believe
there will continue to be room for many more Rotarians without diminishing Rotary's quality. Given the reality of life in today's world, the need for the kind of service Rotary can provide has never been greater. Not one Rotarian among us would be here today were it not for the fact that someone had confidence in us and proposed us for Rotary membership.
President Steve's Snippets
We had a fantastic Fellowship Fun Evening at Rehn Bier on July 29th, enjoying a hearty meal from our BBQ trailer led by David West and the team, followed by David's signature sticky date pudding. Karin Bosomworth and Keith Millington organised an excellent quiz that expanded our knowledge of trivia, though the local knowledge questions proved challenging for some. Josh Helbig also offered a brewery tour, of which many took advantage.
The following Monday we welcomed PDG Barbara Wheatcroft, District 9510 Chair of Australian Rotary Health, who presented PDG Robert Brookes with the prestigious Gold Companion Award for Robert's on going contributions to Rotary Health. Congratulations, Robert!
Our program organiser, Keith Adams, suggested that members be ready to share their life stories in case a guest speaker is unavailable. I've heard a number of members' stories and find them truly fascinating and interesting; everyone has a great story to tell.
A select few members had the privilege of having lunch with PW McCallum from Grapevine, Texas on Friday Aug 2nd. Paul, the Executive Director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Grapevine, shared intriguing insights about how their county handles development and interacts with various service groups.
In preparation for our Zone 8 Group 7 Growth Plan meeting on Sunday, August 4th, led by Ian Chase, PP Sandie and I concluded that our club is doing great things. We have at least 10 service projects, we support at least 8 Rotary programs, and we have at least 8 significant fundraising activities. However, we realised our club promotion activities are limited to just one or two, highlighting why we are not well known in our community and why membership decline is an issue.
The focus of regionalisation is to increase Rotary’s impact and reach, with an emphasis on growth. As a result of our G7 meeting, we plan to create a Facebook page for Group 7 where all member clubs will contribute content about their fantastic projects and initiatives. The intent is to tag other community groups and individuals to increase the reach of these great Rotary stories, encouraging engagement and aiming to boost membership. This commitment is yet to be ratified by our board.
Please consider the growth of our club and think about people you know who are potential members. As a Rotary member, you are the best advocate for our club and Rotary itself. You know why you joined and what being a Rotarian means to you. Sharing your story can inspire others to consider joining Rotary and become people of action who make a difference in our community.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on Monday, August 19th.
Guest Speaker Mayor Bim Lange
Mayor Bim Lange accepting an END POLIO
CERTIFICATE from Karin
Our guest speaker at Meeting 3331 was the Mayor of Barossa Council Michael “Bim” Lange OAM who has been in Local Government for 50 years. Bim gave us a very interesting and informative talk about the Lyndoch Recreational Park Precinct Redevelopment. He told us that this has not suddenly come about because of the “Gather Round” announcement but is the result of 15 years planning started by the original Barossa Districts Council. The Premier is very keen to promote the Barossa as a region which is why there is government backing for this project. Bim answered questions at the end of his presentation which included photos and a video showing the work in progress. Both Peggy & I together with all those present will now have a better understanding of what this will mean for the Barossa in the future.
FELLOWSHIP NIGHT 29th JULY HELD
AT REHNS BRIE
Around 40 members and friends enjoyed a very pleasant evening of fun
and fellowship mixed with an excellent two course meal prepared by
the 'West team'. The tasty hamburgers followed by a to-die-for dessert, better known as Westies Sticky Date Pudding, with ice cream was enjoyed by all.
A spectacular Quiz of twenty questions was prepared by Rotarian Keith M to
test the gathering with the most correct answers enabling him to present the
Serious Silver Trophy to the winners, who managed to get 13 correct.
Rick has a grip on the unique trophy our table won.

ROMAC story sent in by PDG Peter Thomas.
The story of little Haggai David from Mt Hagen is an inspirational one.
Thanks to the efforts of Dr Yapo and Rotarians from Rotary Overseas
Medical Aid (ROMAC) a huge growth on her forehead was removed
in a 7-hour operation at West mead Hospital in Australia.
ROMAC was introduced to PNG by the Rotary Club of Boroko in 1994
and over many years has helped hundreds of children
with life threatening or disfiguring injuries. Their most famous case
was the first ever successful separation of conjoined
(Siamese) twins, Eaustina and Eaustichia Bosin from Bougainville.
Thank you, Rotary. Always Service Above Self!

An opportunity for another fellowship outing
Over the years many Rotarians and friends have attended
the worthwhile theatre functions that have been fundraisers.
This one looks like being a good one. Perhaps a club member
might consider organising this trip to the theatre for those of us
who would like to attend.
