Bulletin 3252

The Clubhouse Tanunda

Thursday June 17th 2021

Invocation:
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary Friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the Month

"Reach Out" -  suggests two hands.. the hands of people who care, people who share, people who serve, people who reach out to other people.  They are action words. They suggest effort, they suggest commitment to demonstrate our faith and our ability to do something.
The words of Clem Renouf.. RI President 1978-79 describing his theme in an address to the 1978 Convention in Tokyo Japan

President John opened meeting 3252 and reminded us all that this was his farewell.  The club has received appreciation certificates from Barossa Area Fundraisers For Cancer and Foundation Barossa following distribution of profits from our first Barossa Air-show.
For the past six months our club has had relieving Presidents in Mark and John and we thank them for filling this role. John rounded off on the meeting with his usual approach of a well chosen Limerick which went something like this
" There was a young lady from Riga
Who went for a ride on a Tiger
                  They returned from the ride
                       With the lady inside
And a smile on the face of the Tiger"

    GUEST SPEAKER - SANDY NICHOLSON
                Birthing Kit Foundation               Australia (BKFA)

Those present welcomed Sandy Nicholson from the Gawler Zonta Club to address us on the work provided by the abovenamed organisation. Sandy said that this project was one of Zonta’s recognised International service projects. There was a slow down in kit assembly last year due to COVID. BKFA, like many organisations, changed the way they do some things, and it is now possible for individuals to purchase smaller numbers of kits and assemble them at home. However, it costs more but it does keep the project going in providing this essential product and service to those who need it.
Zonta provides these clean birthing kits in areas where there is limited access to well resourced medical clinics.  Where women may give birth at home, BKFA provides funds for training in health and midwifery through partner organisations.
A simple kit contains the six basic requirements of:
  1. A plastic sheet 1m x 1m to clean birth site
  2. Soap - to wash birth attendant hands
  3. Gloves - for birth attendant
  4. Gauze - to wipe baby’s eyes
  5. Cord - to tie umbilical cord
  6. Sterile blade – to cut cord

        4..              1.               2.                   5.       6.                  3.

This standard kit costs $5 when the order is for 200 kits. The kit is recognised as a simple, cheap yet effective product, necessary to provide a clean birth, which will minimise risk of infection to mother and baby.
BKFA was founded in South Australia in 1999 as the Zonta Birthing Kit Project. Dr Joy O’Hazy was the founder and developer of the kit to ensure clean birth in low resource settings.
The assembled kits are sent to countries in Africa, South Asia, Haiti and Papua New Guinea. The Kits are then distributed by BKFA partners/NGOs in those countries.
Sandy rounded off her presentation by saying perhaps our Rotary Club might like to consider
getting involved in this worthwhile project by putting together 200 kits or simply making a donation to the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia. Further information is available on the website Bkfa.org.au and members are encouraged to watch the video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_SDdsXJ-4s
The Gawler Light Club has been great supporters of this project and the video link will show their members in action.
Thank you Sandy for telling us about BKFA and how we may consider becoming involved.
From the Editor to all members. Please make sure you take the time to check out the website and the video. Links just above in blue and both are worth viewing.

                   Rotary Information - Peter Thomas
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of PDG Glen Eden. Glen was District Governor of District 9500 in 2000 – 2001.  Fred Wheeler was our Club President in that year. Glen held his conference in Whyalla; a large contingent from this club attended.  Vale PDG Glen.
Another sad passing to report; Doctor Divi’s dad passed way and was buried at Verani. A great old gentleman who took on the responsibility of looking after the members of Rotary volunteer teams undertaking work at Aola and Verani over several years.
Divi’s family are all doing well. Anna is teaching at  Aruligo deaf school, where she lives with her husband and four year old son, John.
A few comments on COVID in the Solomons and PNG.  Total cases in PNG as at Friday 11th was 16,600 ! Total deaths in PNG  was 165; vaccinations to that date was 40,700. Persons entering PNG must be vaccinated and complete quarantine upon arrival.
The Solomons on the other had have NO POSITIVE cases, and their quarantine system is working very effectively for students returning home from overseas institutions, and a few foreign workers entering that country.

Barossa Valley Little Athletics – Sunday July 4th at Bethany Reserve
At last night's meeting Ray obtained sufficient workers for the above event. 12 members indicated their availability. Ray thanked them for their support.
Several L.A. clubs from all over Adelaide and near country take part so around 150 youngsters
will be there.  The parents of the kids will swell the numbers to maybe 300 or more.
The club has agreed to provide the BBQs and do the cooking. All food is supplied.  Starting time is
around 9.00am with egg and bacon for those who need it. The run starts at 10.30 am to finish by
1.30 pm. The usual sausage and onion cook up to follow.

Sunday July 4th is also an important day for Rotary District 9510 as it will be the celebration of changeover from our current Governor David Jones to our next Governor Jeff Neale from the Campbelltown Club. A number from our club are attending this function. Thank you David & Lyn for your leadership and friendship over the past 12 months. No doubt you have seen and experienced the many ways Rotarians and clubs 'Open Opportunities'. We send best wishes to Jeff and Jenny for an exciting productive year as they take on the role in our District.

Received from Angela Pickett
on Monday 7th June

Angela Pickett from Foundation Barossa accepted our cheque for $2000 for the Homburg Homeless Prevention Fund.
She thanked Rotary and the Air Show organisers for their support of this new initiative which will fund the purchase of the first Kids Under Cover youth homeless prevention studio in the Barossa. It will also create seed funding for a long term sustainable solution.
Foundation Barossa is working with partners including council, state government and Kids Under Cover. Thanks to the generous donations from the community, they hope to build the first studio this year
Youth homelessness is not a new issue but numbers have been steadily increasing in the Barossa.
