One of the pillars of Rotary, and indeed our club, is support of Education initiatives. Our speakers, Angela and David, at the last meeting talked about their trip to Cambodia. They showed just how huge an impact Rotary funded and supported education programs can have on disadvantaged societies. The uplift in the society supported by them, demonstrated to us was indeed amazing. In our own club and community, we do a lot of work with our local schools, in particular thanks to the hard work of Prue Maitland. We heard of a new science fair from David and it will be a great project for us to support.

Education, in particular of women and girls, is a huge factor showing the difference between the first world and developing world. The work, we as a club do to promote it, is vitally important both locally and internationally.

As the warmer weather starts to approach us Mike Connors and I are working on some fellowship activities. If you have any suggestions or would like to help, please let us know.

The Rotary Club of Gawler Light is assisting young girls to complete high school in Cambodia.
This program empowers marginalised young women to achieve their dreams and secure jobs that uplift their families and communities. By investing in Cambodia's youth, Rotary Clubs, Rotary Districts, and Rotarians can help advance girls' education, community development, and long-term peace and well being.
In rural Cambodia, access to secondary and tertiary education remains unequal. Many students from low-income families, especially in remote areas, drop out before completing high school due to financial pressures, the need to support their families, and the lack of accessible higher education options. Girls are disproportionately affected, often facing early marriage or domestic responsibilities. These challenges limit future opportunities and make it impossible for families to escape the cycle of poverty.  Without support, promising young students are unable to reach their potential or contribute to their communities.
The RCGL has so far supported six young people in Cambodia to study a one-year English language course at the Australian Centre for English in Siem Reap. The project is registered with RAWCS and partnered with Dana Asia. Students on this program gain vital skills in English which prepares them for further study and work.

The program covers tuition fees for tertiary education, plus all education-related expenses such as books, materials, uniforms, an allowance for food, accommodation and daily expenses.
In 2025, Dana Asia conducted a survey with scholars to assess the real impact of this support on their lives. The findings show that with a scholarship, the students’ lives have changed in many areas. Comments included:
“Receiving the scholarship has made me feel recognised and valued for my hard work and potential.”
" The scholarship has broadened my opportunities. Overall, it has greatly improved my life opportunities.”
“The scholarship gave me the opportunity to study at university and help ease my family’s burden because I no longer had to worry about fees, accommodation and food."
FUNDING OPTIONS: A$3,000 per year to support a scholar at university.

RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) – Young People need YOU!
A great program for Year 11 students from Nuriootpa High School, Faith Lutheran College, Kapunda High School and Eudunda Area School, with a view to helping them to avoid motor vehicle accidents, either as a driver or a passenger.
Roles are guides who accompany teachers and groups of students between presentations, and sausage sizzlers to help feed the hungry hordes at lunch time. The program runs across Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th and Friday 18th September.
It’s always good to have some reserves, so please advise your availability to John Semmler via email vronjohn@internode.on.net or phone 0438 594 327 as soon as possible.

Kiwanis Club of the Barossa Valley Changeover Dinner – You’re invited!

We share a focus on Youth with Kiwanis, and we are planning collaboration with the “new look” Sir Condor Laucke Oration 2026, and Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence activities, so it would be great to share this special event and strengthen our connection with Kiwanis.

Australian Rotary Health Hat Day (World Mental Health Day)
It’s on again this year on Friday 10th October!
Let’s wear our favourite hat to our meeting on Monday 6th October and show our support for those dealing with their own or their loved ones mental health. If you have a hat with a funny story or special memories, wear it with pride and tell us why it is special to you.

"The Travellers" is a family drama film directed by Bruce Beresford. The story follows Stephen Seary, a stage designer returning to his hometown in Australia to visit his dying mother. What was meant to be a brief trip turns into a chaotic experience as he grapples with family obligations, a difficult relationship with his father, and old relationships, all while needing to return to Europe for an opera project.
